Why did Maria Sibylla Merian \u2013 probably in 1686 - move together with her daughters and her widowed mother to the Labadist community on the Waltha estate, which included an extensive property near Wieuwerd in West Frisia? Was it (just) Maria Sibylla\u2019s escape from a broken marriage? There is probably not one single explanation. Several forces and constraints might have been at work.<\/p>\n

Many competent researchers have dealt in depth with the importance of Maria Sibylla\u2019s personal religious orientation for the move from Frankfurt to the Labadist colony. Since she herself never stated anything about her motivation, (1) people often quote her forewords to the Caterpillar books concerning God\u2019s wonderful creation in order to understand her conception of God. The range of the various conclusions goes from a \u201cmajor transformation\u201d, such as in Natalie Zemon Davis\u2019 work (2), to a \u201dwill to self-denial and withdrawal from the world\u201d which is said to have been sometimes overwhelming, even in her Nuremberg times, as stated by Anne-Charlott Trepp. (3)<\/p>\n

Im Staatsarchiv N\u00fcrnberg wird ein gezeichneter Plan des Gel\u00e4ndes mit einer Ansicht des Landguts Waltha aufbewahrt. Er zeigt G\u00e4rten, Kan\u00e4le, Geb\u00e4ude und gibt die Richtung zu den benachbarten Orten an. Zwei Ansichten oben links zeigen das steinerne \u201eSchloss\u201c als Hauptgeb\u00e4ude mit einem gro\u00dfen Tor zum Schutz gegen Eindringlinge, darunter eine f\u00fcr diese Gegend ungew\u00f6hnlich stattliche Baumallee.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
